He was forced to navigate the vast landscape on foot. He also needed to build wooden ladders that were several hundred steps up to reach the summit of the hill. Once he reached the top and began the process that would go on throughout his entire life.<\/span><\/p>\n

At first, he intended to create a portrait in the shape of Crazy Horse. He decided to do this to preserve history. However, he was intrigued by the task of carving the enormous granite Thunderhead Mountain. The sculpture will measure 563 feet high and 641 feet long once it’s completed.<\/span><\/p>\n
