If you’re a fan of the popular TV series Downton Abbey, you’re likely wondering<\/a> how far it is from London to visit the actual home and other filming locations that made the show famous. It’s a long drive, but fortunately for fans, tours can get you there.<\/span><\/p>\n Highclere Castle, known as the setting for the hit TV series Downton Abbey, is a magnificent Jacobean country house<\/a> in Hampshire. Though its fame has been largely due to its use as the show’s setting, it has a fascinating history that dates back to 749 AD.<\/span><\/p>\n Throughout its long and interesting life, Highclere has been inhabited by many people. It is currently the country seat of the Earls of Carnarvon, and the family has been living here since 1679. Originally, the estate was given to an Anglo-Saxon king and later gifted to the Bishops of Winchester.<\/span><\/p>\n The earls have a long and fascinating history of keeping the place up, so even though it might be well-known for being a filming location on Downton Abbey, there are many other aspects to this gorgeous and historic castle you may not have heard about before!<\/span><\/p>\n As with any historic property, there are often things to find in the gardens and rooms of Highclere Castle that might surprise you. For example, Lord Grantham’s mahogany desk in the living room was a gift from Napoleon!<\/span><\/p>\n And there are many other things to see in the park, which Capability Brown created in the 18th century. So if you’re a fan of the show, plenty of tours will get you out to this beautiful and iconic place!<\/span><\/p>\n There are also several great day trips from London to visit the real Downton Abbey \u2013 a stunning Jacobean country house home to the earls of Carnarvon. Queen Anne was a huge fan of his military achievements and presented the land and the funds to build this spectacular Palace.<\/span><\/p>\n Once built, the gilded State Rooms and a vast collection of artifacts set against the stunning stonework are amongst the most significant in Europe.
