How Many Flights Do Pilots Do A Day?

The number of flights a pilot does daily depends on the airline they work for and the type of flights they fly. This is because federal regulations limit the time pilots can spend flying in one day and within a calendar week, month, and year.

How Many Flights Do Pilots Do A Day?

Pilots are not a typical 9-to-5 job, and their schedules are often strange. For example, many flights occur at varying times throughout the day, and some are delayed or canceled without their knowledge.

The number of flights a pilot will do in one day depends on the type of flight and their position within an airline. For example, junior pilots, often first officers, typically do more short-haul and regional flights than senior pilots, who are likelier to fly long-distance international routes.

As a result, a junior pilot might make 20 or 30 flights in a week, while a senior pilot may only make a few. Likewise, a regional pilot may make as few as five or eight flights daily, while a helicopter pilot might have more than 20 takeoffs and landings in a single day.

Each flight is considered part of a pilot’s duty period, which begins when they report for duty with the intent of operating a flight and ends when they park their plane after completing the last flight of the day. In addition, flight-duty hours can be augmented by standby time, when a pilot stands by at the airport to take over a flight when one of their own is canceled or delayed.

When flying a short-haul flight, which encompasses all domestic flights in the US, a pilot can do as many as six or seven flights in a day. For long-distance flights, which last longer than seven hours in length, a pilot can do as many as nine or ten flights in a day.

Nevertheless, pilots cannot work more than 30 hours in seven days, 100 hours a month, or 1,000 hours a year. In addition to flight-duty time limits, regulations usually require that pilots take at least eight to ten hours of rest between flights.

Despite the strangeness of their work schedules, pilots still have enough time to see their families and spend time with friends. They also have a number of vacation days each month and are encouraged to take time off when possible.
